"What's a Chispa?" That's a loaded question as it usually involves a bit of storytelling about the drink's origin and flavor profile. "Chispa" is Spanish for "spark," and the translation and context can mean a flash of fire, a burst of inspiration, or the romantic chemistry between two people - all quite possible after having one or more of these wildly popular drinks.

Chispas are a light, refreshing, and less-sugary version of the typical margarita as they lean on fruit juice and agave nectar instead of the typical sweet-and-sour mixes that can send some palettes into a sugary outer orbit. Versions of this drink may be commonly marketed as "skinny margaritas."

Where It All Began 2025 was the year the Chispa slipped into my life forever; I was visiting family for San Antonio's multi-day Fiesta events, and we walked out of Soluna Cocina Mexicana in Alamo Heights, definitely feeling the spark from the variety of Chispas we enjoyed. The traditional Chispa is made from tequila, fresh lime, and orange liqueur, often enjoyed on the rocks (or frozen) from a salt- or tajín-rimmed glass. Soluna has a spectrum of Chispa options that explore tequilas and flavor adds - my favorites are guava, mango, or orange juice for a breakfast Chispa to remember. While I prefer to have these delicious drinks made by Soluna's Chispa experts, when I make these margaritas at home, I have recipes for Chipas two ways that were gifted to me by our family friends Scotty and Nina. You can adjust your Chispa to your liking to arrive at the blend that perfectly suits your taste buds.

Time To Prepare:

Under 5 minutes (not including anticipation)

Chispa Margarita Tips:

  • For the best, most authentic taste, use only fresh-squeezed lime juice.

  • Scotty's favorite ingredients are Patrón Silver Tequila and Mexican-made Naranja Brand liqueur. If you don't have Naranja liqueur, Triple Sec will do.

  • For an on-the-rocks adventure, 1-inch solid cubes work best. For a frozen Chispa, crushed or small nugget (pebble) ice will give your margarita a silky-smooth texture when blended.

  • These homemade Chispa recipes are similar to our Texas Ranch Water, which includes sparkling mineral water for a bubbly treat.

  • Soluna has served some of the region's best Mexican food since 1979, with Chispas being their signature drink. Soluna is owned by the Calvillo family - successful restaurateurs who also bring us El Mirasol and La Fogata in San Antonio. This place is definitely worth a ~90-minute drive from Austin, when I-35 is cooperating.

How To Make A Traditional Chispa Margarita - On The Rocks 1. Fill a cocktail shaker with some ice.

2. Add the tequila, orange liqueur, fresh lime juice, and fruit juice (if using). Shake for a few seconds. 3. Pour your Chispa into an ice-filled glass rubbed with a lime wedge, then rimmed with salt or tajín. 4. Garnish with a fresh lime wedge or twist. Soluna's signature Chispa always comes with a dried lime slice (pictured).

Simply served, or dressed up with your favorite fruit flavors, I hope you enjoy this delicious Chispa margarita!
